Topaz Photo AI is a relatively new program that only came out in September of 2022. It’s the latest version of Topaz Labs’ high-quality photo enhancement studio. The idea behind Topaz Photo AI was to combine their other products like Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI, and Denoise AI into one simple interface.
Essentially, Topaz Photo AI is your one-stop shop for AI photo editing. Whether you’re an amateur or professional photographer, taking advantage of new editing software can take your photos to new heights. If you’ve been thinking about dabbling with the Topaz Photo AI but want a little more information before you do, I’m here to help.
Verdict: 4/5. Still the best one-click rescue for noisy, soft, or small images. The switch to subscription pricing stings, but nothing else matches the output quality. Best for: photographers who shoot high ISO or print big.
2026 Update: New Name, New Pricing
Two things have changed since this review was first written, and you should know both before clicking any buy button.
First, the name. Topaz has dropped the “AI” and the product is now simply called Topaz Photo. Same software, same team, new label. I’ll keep calling it Topaz Photo AI in this review because that’s the name everyone still searches for and the name most tutorials use.
Second, and more importantly, the pricing model. In October 2025, Topaz Labs discontinued perpetual licenses entirely. The old deal (pay $199 once, own it forever) is gone. Topaz Photo is now subscription only: roughly $199 per year as a standalone app, or $399 per year for the Topaz Studio bundle that includes Photo, Video, Gigapixel, and their cloud tools. If you bought a perpetual license before the cutoff, it keeps working forever, but it’s frozen: new AI models and updates require a subscription. And if you see “lifetime Topaz licenses” for sale on third-party sites today, treat them with suspicion; they’re either resold old keys or scams, so buy direct.
Does the subscription change my verdict? It changes the math, and I’ve updated the pricing section below accordingly. It doesn’t change the quality: this is still the best tool of its kind. You can also try the full app free in demo mode before paying anything.
What Is Topaz Photo AI?
Topaz Photo AI is a comprehensive enhancement tool from Topaz Labs. It allows you to rescue and improve your photos with AI processing that runs locally on your own machine, so your files never leave your computer.

On Windows, you’ll want Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and a dedicated graphics card; the AI models lean heavily on the GPU. Topaz adjusts its published minimums with each model release, so check the current system requirements on the Topaz site before buying, especially if your machine is more than five or six years old.
Recommended Hardware for Optimal Performance
The minimums will run the software, but they won’t give you a good experience. For comfortable, fast processing in 2026 you want:
- Windows: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
- Mac: Apple Silicon (M1 or newer)
- RAM: 16 GB or more (32 GB if you batch process)
- Hard Drive: SSD with plenty of storage space
- Graphics Card: a dedicated GPU with 8 GB of VRAM or more
- Monitor Resolution: 1920 x 1080 or higher

We found that Topaz Photo AI has a lot of areas where it excels. The pros of Topaz Photo AI are:

- It’s easy to use
- Its performance and stability are overall good.

Topaz Photo AI isn’t without its faults. Some of the shortcomings I found with Topaz Photo AI include the following:

- You can’t see thumbnails or raw files in the interface.

Why Topaz Photo AI May Not Be Your Best Choice
While there are plenty of reasons you might want to try Topaz Photo AI, there are several reasons why it might not be the best choice for you and your photos. These are the reasons I found others might not want to use it, but you might not think they’re a reason not to try it.
Topaz Photo AI requires a newer or more updated computer as newer editing software. It can probably work on an older computer, but you’ll get easily frustrated when the editing program runs incredibly slow and barely works, thanks to an incompatible computer.
Photographers with strong Photoshop skills don’t benefit as much from Topaz Photo AI as those without that experience. With more Photoshop experience, you might find that the editing process is more straightforward, and the AI tool doesn’t allow you to feel as involved in the editing process.
This isn’t to say that you can’t enjoy using Topaz Photo AI if you have more Photoshop experience, but it’s likely you won’t find it worth it.
There’s nothing wrong with being a photography purist, but if you consider yourself one, you won’t like using Topaz Photo AI.
Since photography purists dislike relying on post-processing software for the most part or entirely, this editing software won’t benefit you or your photos because you prefer not to edit them at all or very little.
Deep Dive Into Topaz Photo AI Features
Now for what you’ve been waiting for, let’s deep dive into the features of this program so you can see if it’s a good choice for you.
Installation & Setup
Topaz Photo AI is known for having an easy installation and setup process. All you have to do is visit the Topaz Labs website and look for the Topaz Photo product. You can try the software for free in demo mode before paying, but you’ll still need to download the installer.
Once you download the installer, you can follow the prompts on the screen, and before you know it, you’ll have Topaz Photo AI on your Windows or Mac computer.
Importing, Browsing, and Organizing Images
Unlike other editing platforms, Topaz Photo AI doesn’t have much regarding organizing photos. Importing your images is easy, but browsing through them can be tedious, depending on how many photos you imported into the program. This is a finishing tool, not a photo library.

The editing interface is the most important part of Topaz Photo AI. You need to know what you can do within the program to decide if you’re satisfied with just Topaz Photo AI or need to depend on other editing software.
Let’s be clear about what this software actually is: an enhancement tool, not a full editor. As of 2026 it gives you eleven AI-powered tools:
- Denoise (the old DeNoise AI, better than ever)
- Sharpen (the old Sharpen AI, including motion blur recovery)
- Upscale (the Gigapixel engine, for enlarging images)
- Super Focus (recovering genuinely missed focus)
- Recover Faces (rebuilding detail in low-resolution faces)
- Adjust Lighting (exposure rescue for too-dark or blown shots)
- Balance Color (correcting color casts)
- Remove (object removal)
- Dust & Scratch (a restoration tool for scanned photos and film)
- Healing Brush
- Preserve Text (keeping lettering crisp while enhancing everything around it)
Plus cropping and lens correction. What you will NOT find: curves, white balance, HSL panels, split toning, or filters. Those live in your main editor, and Topaz slots in before or after it.
For film shooters like us, that Dust & Scratch tool deserves a special mention: it’s genuinely useful on film scans, and we run our own scans through it regularly. It’s a big part of why this app has a permanent place in our workflow.
The headline feature is Autopilot. When you enable Autopilot, the software will use AI technology to assess the image you’re editing and find ways to edit your photo in the best way possible. It will look for the subject of the picture, mask the subject, and then apply an appropriate amount of noise reduction and sharpening without you having to do anything other than import the image.
Even when this feature is enabled, you can still add more adjustments to the final AI image if you see fit, but this feature is one people love using with the program. It can help streamline your editing process and acts as a solid foundation for the editing process.
There’s a substantial amount of presets in Topaz Photo AI. They all have different levels of sharpening, noise reduction, and enhancement. With the click of your mouse, you can see how the different presets look on your photos. Once you apply a preset, you can still make tiny adjustments to get your images to look precisely how you want them.
Integrations and Batch Processing
Topaz Photo AI fits into an existing workflow in three ways: as a standalone app, as a plugin inside Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, or as an external editor called from programs like Capture One. Round-tripping from Lightroom is the most popular setup: send a photo out, let Topaz work its magic, and the enhanced file drops straight back into your catalog.
Batch processing is built in and works well: point it at a folder of high-ISO shots from an event, let Autopilot make its per-image decisions, and come back to a processed set. For wedding and wildlife shooters, this alone can justify the price.
Performance and Output
The performance of this program surprised me. It ran very well, and even with more complex edits, it still performed. I noticed that the performance varies depending on your edits’ complexity and, more than anything, on your GPU.
As for output, you can export to all the usual formats and preserve your RAW files untouched; Topaz writes a new file rather than overwriting your original. If your machine struggles, the new cloud rendering option offloads processing to Topaz’s servers.
Pricing and Purchasing Topaz Photo AI
Every photographer knows that higher-quality editing platforms aren’t available for free long-term. Before you commit to using Topaz Photo AI, you should know how much it costs, and this is where 2026 buyers need to pay attention, because the model changed completely.
Cost of Topaz Photo AI
Topaz Photo is now subscription only. The standalone app runs about $199 per year (or a higher month-to-month rate if you don’t commit annually). The Topaz Studio bundle, which adds Topaz Video, Gigapixel, and the cloud tools, is $399 per year. The old $199-once perpetual license was discontinued in October 2025; if you bought one before then, your version keeps working forever but won’t receive new AI models without a subscription.
Is it still good value? If you shoot a lot in difficult conditions (weddings, wildlife, gigs, anything high ISO) and Topaz saves even a handful of shoots a year, yes. If you’d only fire it up occasionally, the subscription math is harder to justify than the old one-time price was, and it’s fair to say a lot of long-time customers are grumpy about the change. Whether you think learning how to use Topaz Photo AI is hard or not is personal, and only you will know how difficult or easy you find it once you try. Generally, most photographers, including myself, will tell you that learning how to use Topaz Photo AI isn’t hard.
Topaz Labs makes its interface easy to use and user-friendly for a reason. They don’t want people to struggle to learn how to use all the features and get the best photos possible. They also provide plenty of interactive tutorials and documents that can help you understand how to use different features of the program and more.
As with anything, there will be a slight learning curve when using Topaz Photo AI, but I don’t think anyone will find this program overly difficult to learn and use.
Alternatives to Topaz Photo AI

I mention them because Lightroom’s own Denoise and sharpening tools have improved enormously, and for lightly noisy images they may be all you need. Where Topaz still clearly wins is severe noise, real motion blur, upscaling, and face recovery. The best part is that you can use Lightroom on your phone or tablet, which Topaz can’t match.
Luminar NEO
If you want an alternative to Topaz Photo AI that is slightly more similar to the product than Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, Luminar NEO is the program. They both utilize AI software to enhance and edit images.
Luminar NEO is an excellent alternative because it still uses AI technology, but it incorporates far more traditional editing tools that photographers typically use.
